THE CORNER SHOPS OF BALLARAT

The Ballarat Branch of the Trust held their 2009 AGM and dinner in quite an unexpected location – Harrison’s Funerals Ballarat.
The dinner also served to launch the latest Trust publication The Corner Shops of Ballarat. As the Prince Regent Hotel now Harrison’s Funerals was at one time a corner store the venue was really appropriate. In keeping with the theme of the night, diners wore their pinny or apron and speakers Mr. David Haymes, Bob Benoit and Norm Pinney kept everyone amused with their tales of storekeeping former customer antics. A heritage style menu including pies, bags of lollies and ice cream cones added to the old time shop theme. The book contains background information on the establishment of the ‘corner shop’, comparisons between past and present usage, appearance and the shop locations – a must for anyone researching families associated with the local shops in Ballarat. City of Ballarat Heritage Weekend 8 & 9 May, 2010
We are following on from the outstanding success of the Corner Stores of Ballarat book, creating a driving/treasure hunt tour. It will take place in several areas where there are clusters of shops. The answers are all within, or on the façade of the buildings. Count the finials, look for the old signs and peer in the windows at the floors or ceilings. Let’s see how strong everyone’s powers of observation really are. The treasure hunt will be part of Ballarat Heritage weekend in May.
