Hepburn Graves maintenance and conservation

The Ballarat Branch of the National Trust regularly organises for members to maintain the Hepburn graves, which are located at Smeaton House at Smeaton near Ballarat. The graves are important as they are an intact private cemetery with historical associations with the Hepburn family. The Ballarat Branch is now involved in the development of a conservation management plan for the graves, this work will be carried out by local heritage architect Wendy Jacobs, a member of the Ballarat Branch committee.

Old Iron

The City of Ballarat has a collection of cast iron stored at their works depot. The Ballarat Branch of the National Trust has started a process of recording the various pieces and attempting to identifying their original purpose and location. Currently The City of Ballarat is attempting to locate more suitable storage for the cast iron rather than in the open, exposed to the elements.

Right is Mr Bernie Ebbs standing beside the tombstone of his great grandfather, the grave is located in a private family cemetery on a western district property. National Trust members often gain access to locations not usually open to the public. Ballarat is extremely fortunate to have the Public Records Office (PRO) the Mechanic’s Institute , The Ballarat Historical Society and the Ballarat Central library all wonderful resources available to the public when researching family history.

National Trust – Ballarat Branch Tree Group

The tree group attached to the National Trust – Ballarat Branch comprises Evelyn Ebbs, Greg Binns and June Driscoll. Eighteen significant tree sites have been measured and photographed and the completed survey will be used to update the Significant Tree Register managed by the National Trust. Look up the register on the web there are significant trees across Victoria. The remaining trees have been grouped into seven geographical areas; with Buninyong possibly requiring one or two visits.

The Avenue of Honour will be difficult to quantify. It is understood that a report from the Avenue of Honour Committee will keep the Trust informed of the current status of the rejuvenation and tree replacement. Our member, Wendy Jacobs, is also a member of the Avenue Committee, and Wendy has offered to obtain a report for us. Thanks Wendy.

February Observation Walk

The National Trust observation walk proved to be a great success with over 30 people attending. It was a barmy evening for a walk followed by dinner at Seymours where it became apparent just how competitive some of our members are!

The photograph shows members looking for clues on the Lydiard St leg of the walk.

Open Day at Mooramong

The irresistible combination of heritage architecture, beautiful gardens and veteran and vintage cars proved to be a great drawcard with over 450 people attending on the day. Left are some of the cars from the Begonia Car Club at Mooramong in February.
