BackgroundThe National Trust of Australia (Vic) is a community-based organisation dedicated to the conservation of our significant built and natural heritage. As a formally registered charity, all donations to the Trust are tax-deductible. The Australian Tax Office allows the Trust to extend this tax-deductibiility to heritage-related appeals operated by other organisations, which are known as 'External Appeals'. Generally, the heritage place should be owned or managed by a community based not-for-profit organisation, it should be officially heritage-listed and have a degree of public accessibility, and the heritage activity is usually the restoration of the place or object, but can be another activity directly related to the conservation of the place. Major External Appeals were launched in the 1970’s for landmarks such as St Patrick’s, St. Paul’s, St John’s Toorak, Scots Church and many others. However, other places and objects have benefitted from Trust External Appeals, such as the 1858 Portland Lifeboat, Henderson House Arts Centre Footscray, the Elms Preservation Fund, and the Villa Alba House Museum Hawthorn. Once an appeal has been approved donations are made directly to the Trust, and a receipt is issued which qualifies as a tax deduction.
