Gulf Station
Yarra Valley Pioneer Farm
Set on a 40-acre rise, Gulf Station is one of the original pioneer farms of the Yarra Valley. Built in the 1850s, and farmed as a pastoral property for almost 100 years by the enterprising Bell family, the farm buildings and surrounds retain a large number of fascinating original farm implements and household effects, illustrating the daily life of Gulf Station in the late 19th century.
- The school program has been developed with the aim of encouraging students to observe the farm environment, to consider life at Gulf Station as part of a self-sufficient farming family in the 1800s, and to make comparisons with modern lifestyles and methods of production.
- Farm animal breeds traditionally associated with Gulf Station have been reintroduced to the farm, some of which are now classified as rare breeds. These include Ayreshire cattle, Border Leicester sheep, Clydesdale horses, Berkshire pigs and a range of poultry.
- Gulf Station is ideal for alternative tours for students of architecture, art, photography, land management and tourism.
