PORTARLINGTON MILL TURNS 150
The Portarlington Mill, a significant heritage attraction on the Bellarine Peninsula, will celebrate its 150th birthday on Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 October 2007 at 1pm.
Planned activities over the weekend include music by the RAAF Air Power Brass Quintet, RAAF Williams Clarinet Quartet and the Port Musos, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, burying of a time capsule, vintage truck display and food and beverage stalls.
Property Manager Ron West states “this will be a great opportunity to visit the property for the first time, or have another look on a special day”
“the 150th anniversary of this historic property will provide lots of activities to keep everyone entertained”.
The event has been made possible by the generous support of local sponsors including the Bendigo Bank - Bellarine Peninsula Community Bank Branch, NH Abbey First National Real Estate, Kilgour Estate Winery and the City of Geelong.
The Mill was built in 1857 after early settlers to the Bellarine Peninsula found the district suitable for grain growing. The Mill closed in 1874 and was then used by local businesses and later converted for residential use.
In 1977, the Mill was given to the National Trust who restored the property and opened it to the public as a museum. It is managed by a local committee of volunteers who operate the property as a community museum reflecting local lifestyle and heritage.
The Portarlington Mill is owned by The National Trust (Vic). The Trusts is a non-government community funded organisation dedicated to preserving our cultural and natural heritage.
