The passionate volunteers from the National Trust of Australia (VIC) have secured a prestigious 2007 Victorian Tourism Award in the category of Outstanding Contribution by Volunteers.

National Trust CEO Martin Purslow said: "I am delighted for all those hundreds of individuals who regularly turn out and give so freely of their time in support of our cultural heritage."

"This is a fitting recognition of the role volunteers can play in a community led organisation. The National Trust could simply not exist without them.We have many volunteers in many key roles, including property managers, guides, garden maintenance and conservation all working to support Victoria's heritage," Mr Purslow said.

The illustious Awards recognise the State's leading operators, businesses and individuals in tourism. This award celebrates the strong, ongoing personal commitment made by volunteers who freely give their time and skill, contributing to the professionalism of the tourism industry and the positive image of tourism in Victoria.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Tim Holding congratulated the National Trust of Australia (VIC) for its achievement.

"The awards process is not an easy one, nor is it meant to be," Mr Holding said. "The award recognises people striving for excellence - it's not about being first past the post".

The National Trust of Australia (VIC) operates more than 20 heritage tourist attractions across the State.

"If not for the support of our many volunteers, these Victorian cultural and heritage properties would not be available for visitors to enjoy, and for children to learn about," Mr Purslow said.

560 individuals form part of the National Trust of Australia (VIC) volunteer group, whilst another 500 donate their time to participate in committees, activity groups and events. More than 52,833 voluntary hours were worked by these individuals in the past year - an outstanding achievement and one which the National Trust of Australia (VIC) is extremely proud of and grateful for.
