Free man James Pennington arrived in Victoria in 1839 to work at Barfold Station which had recently been purchased by Sir George Arthur (Governor of Van Diemen’s Land)
In the year prior he had married Sarah Ann Burke convict no 9201 who had been granted a ticket of leave. In the 1850’s they built a bluestone homestead on their farm in Malmsbury Victoria and named it Bleak House. Sarah Pennington died Dec 1871 aged 52 and within five months of her death on the 5th of May 1872 James Pennington died on Piper St Kyneton of a heart attack. It was said that he most likely died of a broken heart. Being a childless couple they bequeathed Bleak House in perpetuity (100 years) to Kyneton Hospital. Upon its 100 year end Bleak House was sold due the hospital not having the funds to maintain the property. The purchaser was to be the now renowned rosarian Susan Irvine and Bleak House would become her first rose garden.

Set on fifteen acres of gardens, the present owners of Bleak House invite you to stay at their romantic French provincial self contained cottage which was once the original stable built by James and Sarah Ann Pennington. Bleak House Cottage awaits those who wish to indulge in elegance, romance and history.
