Visitors to Barwon Grange will experience a spirit of time and place in an elegant early Victorian suburban villa built for upper middle class merchant, property financier and banker, Jonathan Porter O'Brien. This property captures and conserves a particular interval of time - a tableau from August 1855 to July 1856 - reflecting the family's affluent life style in Geelong prior to their return to Liverpool England.

Barwon Grange alone survives intact from many fashionable mid 19th century valuable river frontage residences built along the Barwon. Picturesque Gothic Revival architecture reflects nostalgia for the Old Country and the unique verandah balustrade design, rare smoking room and early conservatory are glimpses into this specific era.
The property is presented, interpreted and marketed as a time capsule. It is managed by volunteers committed to the mission of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and will establish itself as a model of excellence for its innovative heritage programs, curatorial excellence and sound financial management.

Barwon Grange’s Heritage significance is recognised by Heritage Victoria, by in the City of Greater Geelong Planning Scheme, the register of the National Estate and the register of the National Trust. Both the homestead and the garden are important.

Would you like to join the volunteer team that presents the property to the public? Volunteers are always welcome at all Trust properties. More details.
