They added a delightful American colonial style Desbrowe Annear designed house to an existing four-room 1880s cottage.
The Lindsays left their beloved Mulberry Hill, – and its significant collection of Australian art, fine Georgian furniture and glassware, and Staffordshire ceramics – to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) so that others could share and enjoy the collection.
Margaret Preston, Constance Stokes, Rick Amor, Margaret Stone, John Perceval, Rupert Bunny are among the artists represented at Mulberry Hill. There are also some of Daryl Lindsay’s flower and equestrian studies, and works by Joan Lindsay.
Founding chairman of the National Trust and Director of the National Gallery of Victoria for many years, Daryl was knighted in 1956 for his services to art.
Joan Lindsay trained as an artist, but set aside her brushes in the 1930s to concentrate on writing. Her novels include the autobiographical Time Without Clocks and the well-known 1967 Picnic at Hanging Rock, later a popular Peter Weir film.
Would you like to join the volunteer team that presents the property to the public? Volunteers are always welcome at all Trust properties. More details.
