Statement of Cultural Heritage Significance:

CITATION Group Classification - Church, Manse, Hall & Organ. Church Statement of Significance: A major church of 1884 (completed by W P Conolly in 1927) which is of critical importance as the example in which the architects Reed Henderson and Smart inspired the Roman Catholics in Victoria to turn away from the Gothic Revival to adopt the Renaissance and Baroque designs carried out in red brick with cement dressings, and is only a year or two later in date than important Roman churches of a post Renaissance character in London, Paris and Dublin. The large barrel-vaulted nave and broad side arcading, are consistent with the external style. Organ Statement of Significance: A two-manual organ of 11 stops built in 1910 by George Fincham & Son and remaining unaltered apart from the provision of a new wind system. Centrally placed on a rear gallery, and enjoying unusually fine acoustics, the instrument retains its original tonal scheme, tubular-pneumatic action, pipework and detached console with stopkeys based on a design of Robert Hope-Jones. The highly polished casework, incorporating five flats of pipework, is one of the most accomplished local designs of the period.
