Statement of Significance Church Statement of Significance: Melbourne's largest parish church, built of Barrabool stone in 1893-1900 to the design of E J Henderson, and comprising clerestoried nave, transepts, apse and sacristies with crossing fleche and unfinished tower stump to the right of the main facade. The interior includes a groined wooden ceiling, marble fittings, large stained glass windows and an important unaltered organ by George Fincham opened in 1900. First Classified 25/4/74 Upgraded 9/2/89 Revised: Classified Local 3/8/98 Organ Statement of Significance: A three-manual organ of 38 speaking stops built by the Melbourne organ builder George Fincham between 1898 and 1900 and the largest remaining intact example of its builder's work. Apart from minor earlier modifications to the action and console, since reversed during the major restoration of 1992-199 3 by the South Island Organ Company, the original pipework, casework and diapered facade pipes, action, windchests and console remain in a remarkable state of originality. The instrument is the largest organ buit in 19th century Australia to survive unaltered and the second largest, after Sydney Town Hall, to retain a tubular-pneumatic key and stop action, brilliantly demonstrating the technical and tonal skills of the colonial organ building industry at the time.
